Independence and liberation of Osmanian slavery comes on 05.10.1912 after Balkan wars. Surroundings the region of Blagoevgrad stretches on three mountains – Rila, Pirin and Rhodopes - known as the Pirin region. Its main administrative center, main international routes connecting Bulgaria with Greece and Bulgaria with the Republic of Macedonia pass through it. The town is famous for the American University in Bulgaria (AUBG), founded in 1990. The other higher educational institution is the South-western University which provides teachers educations.
